Erythropoietin (EPO)

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a natural hormone produced by the kidney that stimulates the production of red bloods. The Kidney cells that make EPO are highly sensitive to low oxygen levels in the blood. When low oxygen levels in the blood are detected, the kidney cells release EPO which results in new red blood cells being created.


EPO Stimulates Red Blood Cell Production

Over a period of 10-12 days new red blood cells fully mature. You can expect to feel the benefits once the new red blood cells develop in your body.

What happens inside your body? As you breathe reduced oxygen your blood oxygen saturation level reduces; this is detected by receptors in the brain. Your brain sends signals to your kidneys to produce a natural hormone, rythopoietin (EPO). EPO is delivered via blood to your bone marrow. Your bone marrow EPO stimulates the production of new red blood cells. It takes 10 days for new blood cells to mature. Having an increase in red blood cells enables oxygen to be transported around the body more efficiently, because red blood cells carry oxygen to your organs.
